WHAT’S A BANDANA/BANDANNA ?
The bandanna, also known as kerchief, have been a popular fashion accessory for several decades. It is typically a square fabric and is often adorned with the iconic paisley pattern in black, red or blue. With Kamdana, we are truly proud to have created our own exclusive and iconic African pattern that really stands out from the regular bandanna.
This versatile accessory is usually made from organic cotton and is available in a wide range of colors, making it a timeless and stylish addition to any outfit.
THE ORIGIN OF THE BANDANA
According to historical sources, "bandana" or “bandanna” is derived from the Hindi word bāṅdhnū, meaning "to bind" or "to attach." The bandana itself has a long history dating back to the 1680s in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
In modern times, this vibrant paisley-patterned fabric has become a cultural icon, embraced by different subcultures including rock'n'roll, hippie, rock, rap, and hip-hop, as well as the worlds of art, music, and fashion.
We are so proud to have been able to recreate the bandanna with a unique and elegant African/Kemetic patterned print : the Kamdana.
THE BANDANA IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY
During the 1970s, bandannas gained popularity among hippies due to their love for the paisley pattern. Additionally, English rock bands, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, also embraced the paisley pattern and incorporated it into their clothing. The iconic John Lennon even painted paisley flower patterns on his Rolls Royce car.
Over time, musical artists such as Tupac (who really created his own bandana style), Madonna or Renaud (the French singer with his red bandana) and further popularized the bandana, making it a staple in the worlds of hip-hop and rap.
Today, fashion designers frequently incorporate bandanas into their streetwear designs.
Despite its small size, the bandana has a rich history associated with it. It has been used as a symbol of rebellion and as a means of setting oneself apart.
The cowboy aesthetic has made a resurgence in recent years, partly due to the popularity of video games like Red Dead Redemption.
In the Wild West, bandannas were primarily used for practical reasons, such as protection from wind and dust, as well as keeping dirt out. Additionally, they allowed bandits to conceal their identity.
THE BANDANA IN THE GANG CULTURE : THE CRIPS AND THE BLOODS
With the time, bandannas have also been utilized as a symbol of gang membership in the urban culture. For instance, in Los Angeles, street gangs such as the Bloods and Crips have adopted red and blue bandannas, respectively, to indicate their allegiance.
This has led to a negative association between bandanas and crime or violence. Additionally, various violent organizations worldwide have employed bandanas to cover their faces in the public sphere.
WHAT MATERIAL ARE BANDANAS TYPICALLY MADE FROM ?
Bandannas are commonly made of organic cotton or cotton blends. The lightweight, soft, and breathable fabric is easy to fold and offers a comfortable fit. It's a versatile material that suits both casual and formal styles.
